Lungs by Florence and The Machine

I first heard Dog Days Are Over on Skins and have eagerly awaited the release of Florence and The Machine’s debut album Lungs. This is an intense Gothic album with lots of strange imagery and musical layers. At times I’m reminded of Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, and Regina Spektor (no anti-folk here though.)

Highlights include the beautiful Between Two Lungs, Kiss With a Fist, Girl With One Eye, and Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up.) Although the latter lacks the intensity and energy seen at Glastonbury this year. Even though there’s too much going on at times Florence Welch‘s voice carries through the heavy production. An apt title, Ms. Welch certainly has a powerful pair of lungs!

7/10
