A Moorland Village | Watercolour
I found an incredibly faded watercolour print by J. A. Hurley (I think) and really liked the composition. I was reminded of Withypool, Exmoor and decided to paint the moors in the rain. I tackled this as an experiment but am rather pleased with the result. Of course I don’t take any credit for the composition; I just wish I knew a little about the original artist: J. A. Hurley, who also signed the painting with a cat. If you have any idea please let me know. Thanks.

That is a lovely painting and a nice composition. Leads your eye straight into the village and keeps it there. I like that you’ve left the whites in too. One could easily end up with a study in grey – if you are out in the rain. Cheers,
Erin
Trying desparately to find out more about J A Hurely. Do you have any more information.
Just bought a print in a second hand shop of the above picture, in almost black and white with a hind of pink!
Very little. I believe the original artist is James A. Hurley. There’s a painting by him at Andrew Hartley Finearts. What leads to to think it’s the same artist is the foreground tree; the use of wet-on-wet is very similar to other pieces I’ve seen.
Hi martin
J A Hurley is (or was) a painter based in Clitheroe,Lancashire. My friends used to own an art shop there and sold his work. we purchased several of Jim’s paintings but unfortunately never met the artist. i don’t know whether he is still alive or not!

Many thanks for taking the time to let me know. It’s appreciated. I also know that an art gallery in Dulverton used to sell his work.
